Panthers' coach Gerard Gallant knew Dmitry Kulikov was going to miss Friday's game with a case of the flu but the team's second victim came as quite a surprise.
Aleksander Barkov was forced to come off the ice during warmups. The Panthers quickly called Vincent Trocheck to tell him he was playing.
Since he thought he was a scratch, he and Brandon Pirri were taking their time in getting to the arena.
Trocheck would quickly get on his horse.
"We left the hotel at 6:30, grabbed some dinner. Luckily I stayed light and got a salad,'' said Trocheck, who was sporting a nasty cut near his right eye after being checked into the boards in the first.
"There was a ton of traffic on the way here and we were going slow. Then they wouldn't let us into the gate and we had to walk with all of our luggage. It was a day, I guess. That's a first.''
Trocheck made it to the Panthers bench just as the anthems had finished. He took Barkov's spot centering Huberdeau and Boyes.
"I literally ran through the halls,'' Trocheck said. "I was in the cab at 6:57 and on the ice by 7:04.''

The Panthers finally found a home for center Drew Shore, trading him to Calgary in exchange for former Florida draftee Corban Knight.

Everyone was on the ice Wednesday as the Panthers get closer and closer to being completely healthy.
Even Shawn Thornton, whose been out a month with a groin injury, got in a long on-ice workout. Thornton isn't expected to play until the Panthers return home at least.
"Everyone is pretty much coming back,'' Gallant said.

The Panthers recalled goalie Sam Brittain from their ECHL affiliate in Cincinnati on Monday.
With Al Montoya back in South Florida as his wife gave birth to a son, Florida needed a second goalie for practice.
Montoya is expected to fly to Vancouver on Wednesday and be back in time for Thursday's game.

Neither Erik Gudbranson nor Tomas Fleischmann practiced Saturday and are doubtful for Sunday. Gallant said Roberto Luongo would play in goal against the Capitals.
Luongo has won seven of his past eight starts in Washington either for the Panthers or with Vancouver.

Kopy: Tomas Kopecky missed his third straight game (upper body) but did go through the full morning skate Friday and also did conditioning work.
Flash: Tomas Fleischmann (lower body) was out of the lineup after pulling something during the skate. Fleischmann left the ice about midway through the practice and didn't return.
O'Brian bemutatkozott:
Defenseman Shane O'Brien finally made his debut with the Panthers on Friday after being recalled from the minors that afternoon. O'Brien was in Toronto with Florida's AHL team and made the short drive to Buffalo for the game.

With Bjugstad signed, Tallon says he will look at signing Jimmy Hayes and Jonathan Huberdeau to contracts in the near future.
Hayes and Huberdeau become restricted free agents on July 1.

Not long after scoring the game-tying goal in an eventual 2-1 shootout loss to Montreal, the Panthers' center was signing a six-year deal with the team sources told The Miami Herald.
Bjugstad, a restricted free agent following this season, will get $4.1 million annually.

Florida center Dave Bolland spent last season with the Leafs before signing a five-year deal with the Panthers on July 1.
Toronto forwards David Booth (2006-11) and Mike Santorelli (2009-13) both spent time with the Panthers. Maple Leafs' assistant Peter Horachek was Florida's interim head coach last season.

Longtime NHL goalie Tomas Vokoun has decided to retire, according to Czech daily Sport.
"I think I can be proud of the career I had," he told the publication.
Vokoun played 700 games in 15 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, Predators, Florida Panthers, Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins. He went 300-288-35-57 with a 2.55 goals-against average, .917 save percentage and 51 shutouts.
